Did you know?
Holes The small holes in cheeses like Emmental is because of a special starter culture that is added.

Tooth decay That eating a piece of cheese after meals can help prevent tooth decay.

Sleep Cheese can help you have a good night's sleep. One of the essential amino acids in cheese - tryptophan - has been shown to reduce stress and induce sleep.

Penicillin The blue in blue cheese is NOT melted copper wire, but a harmless penicillin mould.

Mice Mice actually prefer sweet smellling foods to cheese. A piece of chocolate or peanut butter make more successful bait in a mousetrap.

Big Cheese The term 'Big Cheese' derives from a medieval term of envy for those who could afford to buy expensive whole wheels of cheese.

Room Temp To bring out its full flavour, cheese should be served at room temperature.

Queen For her 1858 wedding, Queen Victoria - a renowned cheese enthusiast - was presented with a giant wheel of Cheddar cheese weighing over 1 000 lbs.

Animals There are hundreds of different types of cheese that can be differentiated both by the type of milk - raw, skimmed or pasteurized, or by the animal - cow, goat, sheep, buffalo, horse or camel.

Dessert wines Dessert wines and fortified wines stand up well to the rich, distinctively piquant flavour of blue cheese.

Keeping Cheese It is best to keep cheese in the bottom part of your fridge.

French The French consume themost cheese - an average of 24.1 kg per head.  They are closely followed by the Greeks with 24 kg per head.  IDF Bulletin 2000.

Goat Off dry white wines or crisp dry whites are best with goat's cheese.

Prehistoric Cheese can not really be said to have been 'invented' - there is evidence that cheese came into being in prehistoric times.

Blue Cheese Wrap blue cheeses all over as mould spores spread readily not only to other cheese but also to anything near.

Nutrients Cheese is an excellent source of nutrients, containing useful amounts of protein, vitamins and other important minerals.

Beer Beer and cider are good with most cheeses, particularly mature ones.

Welcome to Klein River Cheese Print E-mail

Klein River Cheese is situated in the beautiful Klein river valley, just 7km outside Stanford.  (30 km inland from Hermanus & about 90 minutes drive from Cape Town)

It all started in 1995 when Riaan and Shelley Lourens decided to utilize their surplus milk by making cheese on a small scale.  After studying the market and realizing the growing demand in South Africa for cheese of high quality and the absence of any locally produced Swiss hard cheese, they decided to produce a Gruyere-type cheese.

From a small beginning with a Swiss/German cheese maker, who helped set up the business and later trained local Blue cheese maker Jaco van Beulen, the business has grown steadily.

Klein River Cheese & Dairy South Africa

We now make 2 batches of cheese a day, one batch uses 3000 l of milk.  From each batch we get 20 rounds of Gruyere-type cheese, weighing between 12 and 15 kg.  The cheeses are stored just below room temperature in cold rooms, where they are turned and some washed everyday.
Our Gruyere-type cheese is sold at 3 stages:

  • Young Gruyere-type cheese (3 months)
  • Gruyere-type cheese (6months)
  • Extra Mature Gruyere-type cheese (10 months)

Other cheeses we are making include Colby, Leiden, Danbo, Havarti, Raclette, Van Beulen & Stanford. More recently we have made Grana and an Oak Smoked version of our popular Stanford.  We also make a creamy feta cheese and flavoured cream cheese, though these are only available in our farm shop.

We have been lucky to be awarded numerous prizes over the last few years.  Some recent awards are, in 2003 a bronze medal at the World Cheese Awards in London for our Gruyere-type cheese & in 2004 a gold medal for our Extra Mature Gruyere-type cheese. In 2004 a 1st prize for best hard cheese;  Dairy Product of the year;  Qualite award for outstanding product quality and a Slow Food award for creativity and pioneering efforts to extend the range of world class South African cheeses, all for Klein River Extra Mature Gruyere-type cheese.  In 2005 the Extra Mature Gruyere-type cheese and ordinary Gruyere-type cheeses both won 1st prizes and the Danbo a 3rd prize.

Cheese maker

Our cheese maker, Jaco van Beulen was one of four South Africans selected to partake in the French Cheese makers Fellowship.  He spent a month in Burgundy, France on a study tour learning about French cheeses.

Klein River Cheeses are available throughout South Africa in Pick n Pay, Spar & Woolworths Stores.
We also sell cheese directly from a shop on our farm.
